Josine Wataï Tiavouane

Josine Wataï Tiavouane is Customary Relations Manager for Conservation International New Caledonia, where she works to strengthen the recognition of Indigenous knowledge, cultural values, and customary governance in marine conservation and ocean management. Her work supports the meaningful participation of Kanak communities in the governance of the Natural Park of the Coral Sea.
Originally from the village of Pouébo in the Hoot ma Whaap customary area of northern New Caledonia, Josine holds a Master's degree in Biodiversity and Sustainable Development. She spent eight years as Technical and Scientific Manager of the Mont Panié Nature Reserve with the association Dayu Biik, working alongside local communities and customary authorities while reaffirming her cultural identity and deepening her connection to her Kanak roots.
Drawing on both her scientific expertise and her Kanak cultural heritage, Josine serves as a bridge between customary institutions, local communities, researchers, and policy-makers. She fosters dialogue and mutual learning between Indigenous and scientific knowledge systems, helping shape more inclusive and culturally grounded approaches to ocean governance.
